Honeymoon

OUR FAVORITE TRADITIONS IN MONTEREY COUNTY, CA

We like to say our marriage started in Monterey County, as it’s where we “mini-mooned” after our wedding (we honeymooned in Panama a few months later). We had the time of our lives adventuring around the California coast and soaking in our first few days together as husband and wife. Fast forward nearly six years, and we’ve continued to recreate this trip every year since!

There’s something so peaceful and serene about the Monterey Peninsula area. It’s such a welcome getaway from the hustle and bustle of our busy life in Orange County, and the spots we love seem to get better with age. While we always try to experience new places while we’re there (see what we discovered this time around), we have our yearly “hit list” of restaurants, activities, and locations we have to return to.

Here are a few of our favorite Monterey traditions, that will never get old:

17-MILE DRIVE

The iconic 17-Mile Drive is a scenic road on the Monterey Peninsula that twists and turns along the rugged coastline, through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove. Every mile is breathtaking, with multiple spots to stop, take pictures, and explore.

Some of our favorite places to stop are Spanish Bay Beach (where we always create a balancing rock tower, as many people do), the famous Lone Cypress (which happens to be the official symbol of Pebble Beach), and The Inn at Spanish Bay, which we always save for last. We’ll purposefully time our drive so that we’ll end there right around sunset, which leads us to our next tradition...

DRINKS AT SUNSET AT THE INN AT SPANISH BAY

Since The Inn and Links at Spanish Bay opened in 1987, a bagpiper has played up and down their picturesque coastline every night, rain or shine, at sunset. Guests and visitors are encouraged to sip on a cocktail (or two), cozy up by one of their many fire pits, and take in the sunset views and entrancing tunes. There’s something so mesmerizing and enchanting about this tradition - and if you’ve been to the Scottish Highlands before, it will undoubtedly feel as though you’ve been transported back!

CARMEL BAKERY

Strolling the streets of Carmel-by-the-Sea is a tradition of ours in and of itself, but no visit to this charming town is complete without a stop at the delectable Carmel Bakery. From decadent cookies and sweet treats to savory baked goods and sandwiches, this little bakery has it all… and it’s nearly impossible to walk past their tantalizing window display without going inside. Their gingerbread cookies are not to be missed, and their everything pretzels are absolutely delicious!

CARMEL BEACH & RIVER

One of our favorite memories from our mini-moon is picnicking and soaking in the sunshine at Carmel Beach. Every year we return to this ruggedly romantic beach and reminisce. We’ll pick up lunch at 5th Avenue Deli, grab a blanket, and leisurely spend an afternoon. Afterwards we’ll pack up our things and take a walk to the Carmel River State Beach. This mile-long state beach has a lagoon that attracts all sorts of migratory birds, and when the sun hits the water, it turns the prettiest shades of blue.

THE MONTEREY BAY COASTAL RECREATION TRAIL

Spanning eighteen miles (from Pacific Grove to Castroville) is the beloved Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail. This popular paved path follows the coast past Old Fisherman’s Wharf, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, and much more. Located where the tracks of the Southern Pacific Railroad once ran, locals saw that this abandoned railway had tremendous potential, and it was officially transformed as a walking trail in 1986. Every time we walk the trail we see something new, and we always try to start and stop at a different spot. It’s a must-do!

10 Perfect Mini-Moon Destinations for 2019

10 Perfect Mini-Moon Destinations for 2019

Any engaged couples out there have a short engagement, a tight budget, and the desire to do a huge honeymoon when you can afford it? Allow us to persuade you to embark on the mini-moon! Our mini-moon was a 4-night roadtrip up the California coast, and it was perfect. (Later that summer did our “real” honeymoon in Panama - so we basically had two honeymoons!) We thought we were being so original, but have since learned that a lot of millennials take the mini-moon route these days. (Hey, we’re working people here!) But not everyone knows where to go on such a tight time frame. Here’s our top 10 favorite mini-moon destinations that are romantic, relaxing, pampering, bustling, accessible and DO-ABLE! Heck, visit them all!

Forever Honeymooning - Even With a Dog in Tow!

Every once and awhile we get some slack about being the “Traveling Newlyweds” when we’ve been married for over four years. “You’re not newlyweds!”, they say — and to that we reply, “It’s a mentality, not a time frame!”

And that’s become our motto. We believe that no matter how long you’ve been married, you can forever cling to that “newlywed mentality”. Traveling is bonding - and why not spread out the fun with more than one honeymoon?! Keep the party going!!

We’re seeing more and more actual newlyweds do this too. Sometimes it’s hard to take off work for an extended period of time, so they take multiple weekend trips instead of a traditional honeymoon. You don’t have to use up all of your vacation time, and you’re able to explore more than one destination. It’s genius!

It’s time for y'all to enjoy “MANYMOONS”.

One of our favorite hotel brands, Kimpton, just launched a Manymoon” campaign targeting these kinds of travelers. Millennial couples (like us!) that are more interested in the long weekend trips to hip, urban cities. Several of their properties in Portland, Austin, Pittsburgh, and Nashville have what’s called a “Manymoons Rising” offer, where couples get hooked up with all of the honeymoon perks and a free night stay at their fourth stop! And let’s be real, who wouldn't want to honeymoon in all four of those cities?!

We recently stayed at a couple of the Kimpton properties, the Hotel Monaco Portland (included in the Manymoon campaign), and the Palladian in Seattle. We absolutely loved both properties - they’re stylish, conveniently located in their respective cities, and instantly became our home-away-from-home. We’ve said it before, and this trip solidified it - Kimpton absolutely has the best customer service. Their attentiveness and attention to detail makes you feel not only like a valued guest, but like an A list celebrity! (Which is exactly how you want to feel when you’re honeymooning!!)

DON’T FORGET THE PUP!

Having a hard time leaving your “fur baby” behind on your Manymoon adventure? Don’t!

All Kimpton properties are extremely dog friendly, and the pups get the same royal service we do (if not more)! From dog-friendly wine hour, to treats and toys in the room, to the fact that there is no additional pet fee (let that one sink in), it’s a win/win for dogs and owners alike. Our pup Sally lived like a queen during her stay at both Kimpton hotels, and we joke that it’s spoiled her for life!

Whether you’re actual Newlyweds, or just taking on that “newlywed mentality” like us, we highly suggest that you consider a Manymoon weekend adventure with Kimpton. You’ll have the time of your life, you won’t miss too much work (if you make it a true “Weekender”), and you don’t need to find a pet sitter!

Let us know when you plan your weekend getaways… we’ll come meet you in Nashville. ;)

Taking the SLOW Road Around Mendoza, Argentina

Taking the SLOW Road Around Mendoza, Argentina

Our first stop on our trip to South America with LATAM was Mendoza, Argentina. LATAM makes travel to and around South America super easy and really fun.

We rent a car almost everywhere we go. It gives us the freedom to explore on our own time. What if there’s an epic spot to hike ten minutes down the road? What if we want to go exploring? We typically rent whatever is cheapest and can hold all of our stuff. We aren’t picky when it comes to rental cars, and we rarely splurge on an upgrade.

Waking Up In A Dream :: Cavas Wine Lodge

Waking Up In A Dream :: Cavas Wine Lodge

Every couple of years we find ourselves in a place where we truly wish we could stop time. Where everything we see, eat, do, is pure magic. Where we repeatedly turn to each other and say “Is this real?” Where we text our family and friends and say “Take good care of the dog, we’re never coming home.” Where we plot and plan the milestone opportunities to one day return, “Maybe for our ten year anniversary? Should we renew our vows here?” Where the hotel staff feels like family, and where some of our favorite memories are made.

Cavas Wine Lodge, we never wanted to leave you!
