The Traveling Newlyweds' Itinerary From Our Babymoon on Captiva Island

If you’re looking into babymooning on the Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel area (learn why you should here), here’s a detailed look at where we stayed, where we ate, and what we did.

As we’ve said before, everyone’s pregnancy is different - so listen to your body and do as much (or as little) as you feel comfortable with. We love this area (specifically Captiva Island!) for babymooning for so many reasons, one of which being that it’s so relaxing and stress-free… which is what a true babymoon is all about!

STAY

’Tween Waters Island Resort & Spa :: This resort has a lot of things going for it. The location is ideal (in the heart of Captiva and steps from the water), the chic and spacious rooms, the beautiful grounds and luxe amenities (three words, adult-only pool), and our favorite, the award-winning Spa At Tween Waters! Whether you decide to stay here or not, I highly suggest a prenatal massage here… it’s absolutely heavenly.

As usual, Sunsets were INSANE!

Steps from our room were paths to glorious beaches!

PLAY

Yoga on the beach with Ambu Yoga :: We kicked off our babymoon with sunrise beach yoga, and it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip. They graciously customized the stretches to be pregnancy-friendly, and it felt amazing to stretch my sore and aching body. (And doing so with the sun rising and the waves crashing in the background was incredible, too!)

Relax Beachside :: There wasn’t a day that went by that we didn’t spend at least a few hours soaking up the sun at one of Sanibel or Captiva’s white, sandy beaches. Pack a book, water and some snacks, and head to Blind Pass, Bowman’s Beach, or Lighthouse Beach Park - three of our favorite beaches in the area.

Spa at Tween Waters :: I’ll mention it again because I loved it so much, a prenatal massage here is a must in my opinion. Their trained masseuses know exactly how to calm and care for your sore and achy body... You’ll thank me later. ;)

Rent Bikes with YOLO Watersports :: Based in Captiva, this sports rental company has everything from paddleboards to golf carts (and if we’d had more time we would have rented more equipment). But because our time was short and a bike ride sounded fun, we opted for their bike rental. We had a blast exploring Captiva by bikes, and at only $12 for an eight hour rental, it’s an amazingly affordable way to see the island!

Day Trip to Boca Grande :: The friendly folks at Captiva Cruises offer day trips to Boca Grande, a town located on Gasparilla Island. This captivating “Old Florida” town has no traffic lights or billboards, and couldn’t be more charming. We walked along the shops downtown, enjoyed pastries and a light lunch at some local spots, and even rented a golf cart for a few hours! Note… Boca Grande has an incredible hotel called the Gasparilla Inn that we may be sneaking a night or two in next time we visit. Check it out!

DINE

When it comes to eating out on Sanibel and Captiva, you really can’t go wrong. We’ve eaten almost everywhere, and have yet to have a bad meal. The restaurants here are all quirky and cozy in their own way, and depending on what you (or the baby) are in the mood for - you’ll be sure to find something to satisfy even the weirdest pregnancy craving! ;) Here are just a few of the places we enjoyed this time around:

Green Flash Restaurant :: We love this waterfront spot for lunch, as the views from inside (or outside) are stunning, and the food is delicious! Pregnant mamma’s, order one of their indulgent virgin pina coladas - and their shrimp tacos are to die for!

Mucky Duck :: While the food is great, we love hitting up the Mucky Duck for cocktails at sunset. Since I couldn’t order my typical rum punch this time around, I opted for simply the punch - and it was just as tasty!

Old Captiva House :: Our favorite place for a romantic date night is the Old Captiva House, as it’s elegant and chic without feeling pretentious. Known for their fresh seafood, we highly recommend the Grouper or the Chilean Sea Bass!

Cantina Captiva :: If you’re anything like me, you crave Mexican food with a passion almost daily. This hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant was just what I was dreaming about, with tostadas so tasty and crispy, I cleaned my plate in a matter of minutes!

The Bubble Room :: Mamma’s with a sweet tooth, this is your place. While they serve a full menu (that looked really good), we come here for one thing only: cake. The Bubble Room is known for their Christmas themed decor and nostalgic decor, but in our opinion the real winner here is their mouthwatering cakes. Try the Orange Crunch. Trust us.

Cheers to lunch dates and virgin piña coladas!

Hoping this is us in 50 years :)

We may or may not have consumed all of this cake. Don’t judge.

This babymoon was exactly what we needed. Warm weather, a tropical setting, fun activities, delightful meals, and tons of good, quality time together. If you have any questions regarding our time on the Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel (and Captiva), or babymoon-specific details, leave a comment and let us know!

Why You Should Babymoon on Captiva and Sanibel Islands

Shortly after we found out that we were pregnant we made a list of the places that we love, places that we hoped to return to before the baby comes. Places that are not only dear to our hearts, but also are relaxing and pampering and fit our “babymoon” criteria. The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel area was at the top of that list.

Since we were first introduced to this hidden gem of a spot back in 2016, we’ve been obsessed. (If you’ve been following us for awhile, you probably already knew that!) We’ve always said it would be the perfect place for a babymoon - and now that we’ve babymooned there, we can confidently say that it TRULY is. Here’s why this Floridian oasis should be at the top of your list, too:

IT’S EASY TO GET TO & EASY TO EXPLORE

Key word here, “easy”.

No matter how far along in your pregnancy you are, or how good you’re feeling, you want your babymoon to be as uncomplicated and trouble-free as possible. Long travel days are hard on your aching body, and dealing with crowds and delays is not ideal. Thankfully, no matter where you are in the US, chances are it’s an easy flight (or two) away.

We flew from our local airport, John Wayne (SNA) in Orange County to Dallas (DFW). We had a short layover (but enough time to hit the fame Centurion Lounge), and then headed to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). It’s our favorite kind of airport, busy enough that getting flights in/out aren’t a problem, but small enough where going through security is hassle-free and (usually) very quick. (Plus, if you’re like me and craving bagels during your pregnancy, they have a great bagel shop right after security!)

It’s just about an hour drive from the airport to the Fort Myers/Sanibel area. We actually look forward to the drive - it’s jaw-droppingly scenic, especially as you near Sanibel (we spent the majority of our babymoon in the Sanibel/Captiva area). Once in town, the speed limits are between 25 - 35 MPH throughout the whole island - making every outing and activity perfectly leisurely. Why rush when you’re on vacation?! (And trust us - you’ll never have to deal with traffic!)

Smiling because we’re back in paradise! It feels great to slow down and get on “island time”.

IT’S LUSH & TROPICAL & OFF THE BEATEN PATH

If you’re on the hunt for a tropical babymoon destination, this is it. Turquoise water, white sandy beaches, neon sunsets… it’s absolutely picture-perfect.

But what we love most about the Sanibel/Captiva area specifically is how remote it feels. You won’t find the big crowds or the inflated prices that you would at a resort in Maui or in the Caribbean. Instead you’ll find family-owned establishments, calm streets, and scenic beaches that aren’t heavily populated. You might even have the beach to yourself!

We had this beach to ourselves most days, with the occasional people scouring the sand for shells.

YOU CAN EAT FOR TWO - THE FOOD IS THAT GOOD

One of my favorite excuses since I’ve been pregnant is that I am now eating for two - and what baby wants, baby gets! I’ve always been a foodie (it’s a lifestyle) but with heightened hunger pains and a growing appetite, my food obsession has reached a whole new level.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll want to pick a babymoon destination that has plenty of culinary options - and that’s exactly what you’ll find here! From mouth-watering seafood to decadent key lime pie, you’ll be able to satisfy your every craving. I can proudly say that I ate my way around Sanibel and Captiva. (See more about where we ate in Sanibel/Captiva here.)

IT CAN BE AS RELAXING OR ADVENTUROUS AS YOU WANT IT TO BE

Planning a babymoon weeks (or months) in advance can feel daunting, because you really have no idea how you’ll be feeling when the time comes. Whether you’re thriving living an active lifestyle or your pace is slowing down drastically, the Sanibel/Captiva area can truly meet your needs.

We had days where all we did was eat, lay by the beach, eat, play cards, and eat some more. On the days where we wanted to be more active, we’d go for bike rides, on a day trip to Boca Grande, walk the beaches, and more. It’s the kind of place where time moves slowly, and you’ll never feel the need to rush or “see it all” - but there IS a lot to do!

Bobby gets restless, so he plays in the sand. Maybe he needs a child to entertain?

IT’S AFFORDABLE

Because the Sanibel/Captiva area is off the beaten path, you’ll be able to have the tropical getaway you’ve been dreaming of for a fraction of the price at other more popular destinations.

Saving money on resort fees and expensive plane flights means you can order that extra slice of pie or indulge in a longer prenatal massage… and all my mama’s said “AMEN”! We think that couples should treat their babymoon like a honeymoon, and here you can do exactly that - guilt-free!

Since we’re saving money, we decided we may as well indulge in a couples massage!

And of course cake at The Bubble Room!

The best way to end a relaxing day… sunsets on the beach!

Our tagline has always been, “Who says the honeymoon has to end?” In this new stage of life we’re in, we really should change that to babymoons! And while this season WILL end inevitably (in about three months), we’re embracing every moment that we can just the two of us. Though we spent the majority of our babymoon in the Sanibel/Captiva area specifically, we can’t recommend the entire Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel area enough. If you have any questions about our time there, leave a comment and let us know. We’ll do our best to answer!

Look at those colors!

My Comfy, Stylish, and Bump-Friendly Go-To's This Pregnancy

Alli here!

These past six months have been wild to say the least. I can now officially out-eat my husband, I have to pee CONSTANTLY, and every day I watch as my innie belly button slowly becomes an outie (I give it two more weeks - max). Pregnancy is weird and fun and hard sometimes (ok, a lot of times), but I’m finding the joy (and the humor) in it.

One of the questions I’ve gotten the most is about what I’m wearing. As my body has changed and my pants have stretched, I’m realizing that cute, stylish, and (truly) comfortable maternity clothes are few and far between. Our travels have taken us to places with with all kinds of weather - resulting in me spending way too many hours scouring the internet for bump-friendly clothes that won’t break the bank and that I actually like. I’ve been so honored by the amount of messages and DM’s I’ve gotten asking about what I’m wearing, and I'm realizing that a blog post like this would have been so helpful for ME if I was newly pregnant!

So, here’s a roundup of my Top 5 Bump-Friendly Go-To’s (some maternity, some not) that have been life savers this pregnancy. And most of these are pieces that will work for you post-maternity, too!

1. MY FAVORITE MUMU DRESS - $28.88, Amazon

I’ve always been skeptical of Amazon fashion, but my friend Lauren told me about this dress so I decided to give it a try. Holy cow it’s amazing. Great quality, breathable, SO comfy, and you can’t beat the price. It’s honestly all I wanted to wear when the weather was warmer (and it’s great for travel), so I bought it in four different colors. And I’ll probably still buy more. You can’t beat the price. It does shrink a little, so I suggest ordering a size bigger than your normal. (Especially if you’re pregnant) A medium fits me perfectly, and still has plenty of room for my growing bump. I’ve worn these dresses on the plane, to weddings, date nights, beach walks, on errands, to fancy dinners, you name it. They’re so versatile. I can’t stress enough how much I love them. See my full Maternity Must-Have list on Amazon here

2. MY FAVORITE MATERNITY JEANS - $138.00, Madewell

If there’s anything worth splurging on when it comes to maternity wear, it’s a good pair of jeans. I’ve tried A LOT of them on, and these two pairs (blue and black) are by far my favorite. They’re so comfortable, look incredibly flattering, and don’t fall down. Madewell has always been my go-to for jeans, and once again they don’t disappoint. Their maternity pants run a little big and tend to stretch out, so order a size below what you normally wear. The size 26 works great for me.

3. MY FAVORITE LEGGINGS - $64.00, Blanqi, $98.00, Lululemon

When I’m not wearing an Amazon mumu or my maternity jeans, I’m wearing leggings. To be honest, most days that we’re home, there’s a good chance I’m in leggings. The Blanqi Maternity leggings are great - they go over the belly in a really snug and comfy way, and they’re surprisingly really flattering. After reading the reviews I decided to size up, so I wear a size Medium and love the fit.

The Lululemon Align leggings have (and will) always be my favorite - they’re SO soft, and at 26 weeks I’m still wearing my normal size! Praises!! (I’m a size 6!)

4. MY FAVORITE SWEATERS - $46.00 & $48.00, Pinkblush Maternity

Up until pregnancy, I’d never heard of Pinkblush - and now I think I’m their biggest fan. These two sweaters are so affordable and so well made, and I’m obsessed with their oversized style. They look great with leggings or jeans and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I love how soft the green one is, and I can’t tell you how many compliments I’ve gotten on the leopard sweater. (I’m a size Small in both.)

5. MY FAVORITE TRAVEL SET - N:Philanthropy, $178.00 & $178.00

I’ve only had this set for a week and I think I’ve worn it every day since we’ve been home. IT’S SO COMFORTABLE and so versatile. I love that I can snuggle up with it on our couch, wear it on a plane, or mix and match the joggers and sweatshirt as I wish. It’s definitely on the pricier end, but the quality and ethics behind the brand makes the purchase justified in my opinion (read more about N:Philanthropy here). Both Bobby and I have multiple items from them, and we can honestly say they’re the best. I’ll be wearing this set my entire pregnancy and after, too. (I’ve found their things run a tad small, so size up. I like a more oversized fit when it comes to joggers and sweatshirts, so I’m a size Large.)

...While we’re on the subject!

Amazon Prime has been a life-saver during this season - I’ve bought everything from my FAVORITE maternity pillow (every mamma needs this), to dresses, to prenatals! I’ve compiled all of my must-haves here. Hope this is helpful for you, as I sure wish someone had done this for me! :)

Credit Card Points and Airline Miles Are Our #1 Travel Tool - Should You Get in the Game?

Alli, Sally, and I have put in quite a bit of mileage in 2019. From road trips, to flights, to cruises, we’ve been criss-crossing the globe highlighting the best of anywhere and everywhere. And while we are often working with tourism boards or brands on these projects, many of the biggest and best adventures are on our dime. With the most common question we get on TN being how we afford to travel like we do, I’m here to answer it… we can’t.

Enter credit card points and airline miles.

We booked this ENTIRE Greek Babymoon with points and miles! OPA!!!

I’m not going to use this post to go too far into how credit card points and airline miles work, but I will tell you that I learned everything I know from The Points Guy, the authority on all things points and miles. Feel free to head to TPG’s site and see how deep this rabbit hole goes! Note - this post is not sponsored by them :)

The purpose of this post is for those who aren’t playing this game at all to decide if you should get in or not. It can be super rewarding and provide travel experiences that some would never choose to afford, but it’s not for everyone. Here are 5 questions to ask yourself before getting in the game.

We promise we don’t work for Chase. But we are Chase points nerds.

  1. Am I a responsible credit card user? Credit card companies can offer lucrative sign up bonuses and benefits because of the 40% of people that are currently carrying a balance on their card. Those hefty interest rates make them a ton of money, and they want to suck more people in with enticing offers. If you have a balance or don’t plan on paying off your credit card monthly, this is not for you. Your benefits will quickly be erased by the interest rates you’re paying, so you should stick to your debit card. While paying off your balance monthly is super important, a responsible user also doesn’t use too much of their credit, as credit utilization is a big factor in determining your credit score.

In other words, if you have a credit line of $5,000, don’t spend $5,000 a month and pay it off. While occasionally you’ll need to utilize more of your credit (that’s what it’s there for!), try to consistently to keep it low.

  2. What’s my credit score? If you plan on being a responsible credit card user, then lets do this. You can check your credit score using Credit Karma, and check in on it periodically to see how you’re doing. Assuming you have good credit (a FICO score of 670 and above is good), I’d suggest starting off with a Chase Freedom or Chase Sapphire Preferred, but there are plenty of options to begin this adventure.

If your credit score is greater than 750, you can likely qualify for the more premium cards. Maintaining credit card accounts and paying off your bills will allow your credit score to steadily increase, and unlock more of the exciting credit cards :)

  3. Do I have any big purchases on the horizon? If you’re only going to be opening one card to get started, this is not that big of a deal. But this is something to have in the back of your mind if you really get into credit card points. Since you will make mistakes (as we all inevitably do), there will be moments on this points journey where your credit takes a hit. If you’re making your payments and not carrying huge balances, you’ll steadily return back to your norm. All that to say, if you’re planning to buy a car or a home (especially!), then you don’t want to mess with your credit score. You want it to be as high as possible!

For example, we aren’t planning on buying a home for at least a few more years, so I’m churning through credit cards trying to rack up as many benefits as possible. But as we get closer to wanting to qualify for loans, I will definitely be toning it down.

  4. Will I spend enough to justify the rewards? It’s always exciting to see the offers that card companies offer, like Chase’s current offer of 60,000 points for the Sapphire Preferred (which could take you on two round trips across the country). But those 60,000 points only come when you spend $4,000 in the first three months that you have it. So ask yourself, will I naturally spend that much? DO NOT spend $4,000 only to get the 60,000 points.

And do not sign up for the card if you aren’t going to make the bonus, it would be such a waste!

  5. Do I have the time and energy to keep track of all of this? Starting with a card like the Chase Freedom or Sapphire Preferred cards, it won’t take you too much time to keep track of it all. Just pay your bills on time and hit your spending requirements in the beginning. But with the more premium cards you’re going to want to pay attention. They offer sign up bonuses, travel credits, store credits, Uber credits, free baggage, lounge access, and more! And often those benefits reset after a year (not the sign up bonus), so you need to make sure you are maximizing all of your benefits. The more cards you have, the more time and energy it takes to maximize all of your benefits. Once you get more than 3 cards, I’d recommend setting up a spreadsheet.

As an example of a failure, we have had the American Express Platinum card for the past 4 years, and it comes with a $100 per year benefit to Saks Fifth Avenue. You can receive two $50 statement credits per year (one each half of the year), so it’s basically free money! I didn’t know about it until early December… so we missed out on some free Saks shopping! Sorry Alli!

Utilizing credit card points and airline miles is an incredible way to save money to travel the world. If you’re smart and strategic, points can make travel easier, more affordable, and more lux! I’m planning on sharing more about how we use points and strategize in the coming months - let me know what you’d like to know more about! Or, head to The Points Guy and search for anything! They’re the real experts!

Qatar Airways’ Qsuite is arguably the best business class in the sky… and you better believe you can book it with points!

Alli's Famous Butternut Squash Soup Recipe for Cozy Winter Nights

A few weeks ago we posted something on Instagram that we’ve never posted before… a recipe! And not just any recipe, but Alli’s Famous Butternut Squash Soup Recipe!

The response was so great that we’ve decided to share it on here as well. It’s easy, it’s healthy (vegan and gluten free!), and it’s absolutely delicious. Plus, you can make it in your Vitamix! (If you don’t have one, you know what to ask for this Christmas. We have this model - and we’ve even taken it across the US with us!)

This recipe can easily be made in advance, and can easily be adjusted to please your taste buds. Some people like to add a little heavy cream to make it creamier, or lessen the amount of ginger so it doesn’t have as much of a kick. Play around with it!! (And let me know if you make any noteworthy adjustments!)
