Why Tempe, Arizona Was Our First Out-of-State Road Trip Post Covid-19

This has been one of the most life-altering, surprising, and wild years for our family. From having a baby to a global pandemic, just about everything about 2020 has been a trip. Except, well, the actual “trip” part— because like everyone else we’ve been stuck at home!!

November hit and we were beyond anxious to get out of our living room. As we started to throw around destination ideas, we immediately got excited about Tempe, Arizona. Here’s why:

Access

(Disregard the fact that we planned a 5000 mile road trip for Jude’s first time out of state, we’re weird.) Most people we know (in SoCal) drive to Palm Springs, or San Diego, or maybe the mountains, for their kids’ first trip. But we’’re here to tell you that driving from the 375 miles from our home in Costa Mesa to Tempe is NO PROBLEM! It is so incredibly doable, especially if you get up early, hit the road, and arrive by noon.

You can take the I-10 or I-8, and either one is a smooth sailing interstate with minimal traffic (as long as you leave before 7 - thanks SoCal). We arrived in Tempe just in time to grab lunch and put Jude down for his mid-day nap- and we still had all afternoon and evening to explore!

Hotels that Welcome Your Pup (and Take Covid-19 Seriously)

To add to the adventure of our baby’s first road trip, we of course brought Sally (our bernedoodle) along too. Although that definitely creates a few more challenges, Tempe’s hotel options make it a no-brainer for traveling with a dog. We’ve now stayed at both the Canopy by Hilton Tempe Downtown and the Graduate Tempe and Sally LOVES each of them. Both hotels provide your pup with a goody bag on arrival, which means major first impression points.

This time we stayed at the brand new Canopy, and were quickly aware of how clean and secure the hotel felt. With hand-sanitizer stations throughout, new cleaning standards for both the room and public areas, and a face covering requirement throughout the hotel, we were able to relax and not worry about Covid.

Our room was spacious and thoughtfully designed, and we were all obsessed with the big cozy bed (especially Sally and Jude). The Canopy is in a perfect location, within walking distance to a multitude of shops and dining options. While Jude napped, we’d take turns exploring!

Jude was loving time with his sister!

Sally is always the first one on the bed.

The Canopy treats pups like royalty!

Outdoor Dining

When we planned this trip, we had no idea what the state of Covid-19 would be. Visiting a destination with ample outdoor dining was a must, both because of safety and Sally (ha!). There are so many tasty options, and currently our favorite spots include:

  • Postino Winecafe - A bruschetta and wine bar that is as picturesque as it is delicious. A MUST.

  • Chuck Box - Get a burger and thank us after you get another. It’s iconic.

  • Daily Jam - Great spot to start your day with a hearty breakfast and healthy juice options.

  • Fate Brewing - Good beer and pizza? Sign us up. (Oh, and they have a killer happy hour, too!)

  • Sauce Pizza & Wine - Yes, we had pizza twice in one day. And we weren’t mad about it. Tell them what type of pizza you like at Sauce and they’ll give amazing recs!

  • Pedal Haus Brewery (dog friendly patio and another great happy hour) - Love the their beer!

  • Shady Park - If the temperature dips down at night and you need a warm up, head to Shady Park for some warm and flavorful ramen.

  • Culinary Dropout - delicious pretzels, famous fried chicken, and a rockin’ live music venue (when available)

  • Cartel Coffee - Our go-to coffee spot in Tempe. There are others that we like too, but we’re here daily!

Jude hoping for his first taste of bruschetta!

Outdoor Activities for the Whole Family

Global pandemic or not, we love Tempe because there is so much to do outside. Hiking, shopping, art-walking… we’re good at burning off all the food we eat while we’re in town (most of it at least).

“A” Mountain - A short but steep climb that’s worth the view! A great start to our day!

Rooftop at the Canopy - If you’re staying at the Canopy, then the rooftop is perfect for pool time, a cocktail at Alibi, and a sunset. Enjoy!

Art Walking Around Town - So many murals to see! We loved the “Look Ma, It’s Tempe”.

Kiwanis Trail at South Mountain Park/Preserve - Another easy trail that takes you to a beautiful lookout

Tempe Town Lake Pedal Boats - We pedaled around in a swan at sunset and will never forget it (both because of the view and Jude’s meltdown).

Desert Botanical Garden - A serene spot for a stroll, the desert botanical garden is beautifully manicured and very educational. They often have incredible art installations, with the “Electric Desert” in 2019 being one of the most remarkable light displays we’ve ever seen! The most recent exhibition was Cracking Art’s “Wild Rising”, a display of animals sculpted in brightly colored, recyclable plastic throughout the garden (you’ve seen Cracking Art’s penguins if you’ve ever visited a 21c hotel - they’re amazing!)

Hiking off all the pizza - on our way down from “A” Mountain.

Jude loved the swan for about 10 minutes… we needed a babysitter.

The sunset was still insane, even though Jude killed the vibe. Ha!

Art walking around town.

Sunsets

This needs to be its own category because of the consistency. We’ve now been in Tempe 4 times together in the past 2 years, (at different times of the year), and we have ALWAYS gotten a show in the sky. We’re not going to guarantee that you’ll get a colorful explosion every night, but your chances of seeing a rad sunset are high in Tempe. If you don’t see one, come back with us.

Tempe sunsets never disappoint!

Epic night at Tempe Town Lake!

A short drive, delicious food, relaxing hotels (even with a baby and a dog), plenty to keep you busy outside, and most importantly - safe. Tempe is a great destination to test the waters of travel again, especially if it’s within driving distance. When you visit, leave a comment and let us know your favorite spots!

The Best Kept Secret in 2020 - Secret Season!

It’s no secret that 2020 has been a not-so-good year. Well, we had a son and that was absolutely wonderful, but everything else has been pretty rough. But good news - we’re here to help you cap 2020 off with a Covid-safe vacay that won’t break the bank. Have you heard of “Secret Season”? Similar to “shoulder season”, it’s a time of year in Scottsdale (October-December) that offers an uncrowded destination and hotel bargains that will have you thinking, “How can we NOT go?”. We’re talking the same luxurious experience and prime weather of peak season February and March, for an average of 30% lower rates. You may even feel guilty tanning while the rest of the country is avoiding blizzards.

We may “secretly” sneak out to Scottsdale in the coming weeks, and if we do, you’ll find us at the Hyatt Regency. This sprawling resort is a dream for families craving room to roam, and they’re pet-friendly! We stayed there last December and enjoyed a room with a patio right on their small lagoon - Sally LOVED it. Now that we’re a family of four (one kid, one dog), we’d have so much more to take advantage of - water slides, gondola rides, biking and walking paths, golf, and spa treatments (Alli?). Jude may not be able to take a ride on the three-story water slide this time, but Bobby will go enough times for the both of them! And remember… this will probably be in November or December, when most of the country is in their jackets and boots! Scottsdale in November boasts highs that are in the mid-seventies! Perfect weather to get your tan on! A few of our other favorites include Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows, Hotel Valley Ho, The Scott, and Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort & Spa. So many choices… you may need to stay a little longer!

Sally loved our patio at the Hyatt Regency. We did too - especially with this spread!

Speaking of choices. Good luck deciding where to eat in Scottsdale. Maybe we should spin it a different way… there are so many amazing restaurants that you could blindly pick a spot and you’d be raving the next day. And now that many of them are open for dine-in service (with Covid-safe precautions), here are some of our favorites:

  • The Mission - Go to the one in Old Town -our favorite! The ambience is perfect for a date night, but buzzing enough for the whole family to chat – or baby babble - freely. If you don’t get tableside guac, then you’re blowing it. If you want to splurge, share the pork shoulder tacos. And churros are also a must.

  • Toro Latin Restaurant & Rum Bar - Ready for flavors your taste buds won’t comprehend? South American meets Chinese cuisine and explodes in sushi, ceviche, and insane rum cocktails! And if you’re there in December, check out Christmas at the Princess for an outdoor, physically distanced winter wonderland!

  • FnB - Seasonal, farm-fresh, local ingredients put together in a way that will have you thinking, “Why have I never put these together?” Prepare to be dazzled and to leave planning your next visit.

  • Farm & Craft - If you’re looking for a healthy start to your day, Farm & Craft serves healthy, sustainable food with hormone free and organic ingredients, kombucha on tap, and gluten-free and vegan options,! We recommend the Acai Bowl or the Breakfast Sandwich!

  • The Hash Kitchen - As we’ve mentioned before, we knew we were in for a treat when we walked in and saw Arizona’s largest bloody mary bar. Due to Covid this may have changed in terms of DIY, but they still have a delicious bloody mary! And incredible donuts! Hashes are their specialty, and you definitely won’t leave hungry!

  • Cartel Coffee Lab - Not for a meal, but for coffee. There are multiple Cartel Coffee Labs and they are all good… it’s where we get our caffeine fix!

  • Where we’re headed next… Andreoli Italian Grocer, Virtu Honest Craft, Maple & Ash, and Butterfield’s Pancake House

To work off all the food, we have a few Covid-safe activities planned.

  • Hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. With over 30,000 acres of Sonoran Desert and 225+ miles of trails, it’s an incredible sight and naturally socially distanced activity. We recommend arranging a guide with REI Co-op Experiences to show you the way.

  • All aboard! We’re looking forward to taking Jude on a Holiday Lights train ride at the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. If you’re there during the holidays, it’s pure magic.

  • Looking to hit the links? There are more than 50 golf courses in Scottsdale, and prices are typically a bit lower than peak season during secret season. While you won’t see us for a round of 18, you may find us at Topgolf Scottsdale.

  • Wine Tasting! We’ve looked into it, and five of the six Arizona wine tasting rooms on the Scottsdale Wine Trail are open! The wineries are Aridus Wine Company, Carlson Creek, Salvatore Vineyards, Su Vino and Merkin Vineyards. LDV Winery is closed for construction, but the other five are within walking distance of each other and have some delicious wines. Aridus Wine Company is currently the only one you need a reservation for. Can we bring Jude?

  • Las Noches De Las Luminarias - This holiday season, the Desert Botanical Garden will be lit with 8,000 flickering luminarias and twinkling lights. Add in a festive holiday drink and it’s the perfect outdoor event for us right before Jude’s bedtime :)

  • Holiday Lights at Salt River Fields - a brand new holiday lights event specially designed as a safe, drive-thru holiday experience enjoyed from one’s own vehicle that sounds like pure MAGIC. There are nearly 5 million lights synchronized to Christmas melodies that are bound to make Alli weep tears of joy.

Shhh… Secret season in Scottsdale is where it’s at. If you haven’t ventured out on a vacay in 2020, this is the perfect place to test the waters. Wide open spaces, safe and clean resorts at a bargain, world-class dining, and outdoor activities aplenty. (But let’s keep this little secret between us, k?)

We can’t wait to be back exploring the Sonoran Desert!

IOWA STATE PARKS :: WHY THEY SHOULD BE ON YOUR ROAD TRIPPING RADAR

This post is sponsored by Travel Iowa. All thoughts and opinions are our own.

There’s no doubt that life is weird right now. Simple outings like going to the grocery store or getting your nails done aren’t as simple as they used to be. Graduations, weddings, concerts, extravagant trips overseas… they’ve all been canceled. We’re adjusting to a new normal.

And while this new reality is hard and scary, we’re choosing to find joy in this season.

One of the ways we’re doing that is by revisiting past locations we’ve road tripped to that stole our hearts. Places that are open and ready for visitors. Places that are off the beaten path, places that have unique landscapes and are easy to social distance... Places like Iowa!

IMG_0011.JPG

IOWA?

Ok, you probably didn’t see that coming - but hear us out. Last year we found ourselves driving through Iowa not once, not twice, but three times (from California!). It’s surprisingly scenic, with an abundance of state parks that are not only safe amid these times, but have an array of outdoor adventures the whole family will love!

Horseback riding? They’ve got it! Relaxing beaches? You bet! Stunning hiking trails? They’re all over! Picturesque spots to have a picnic? You better believe it!

Iowa State Parks have a little of everything, and that’s what makes them so unique! From their jaw-dropping bluffs, to their mesmerizing waterways and views, we guarantee you’ll be saying “Wait… this is Iowa?!

Prairie Rose State Park is one of our favorites!

Can anybody tell us what type of bird this is? Spotted in Prairie Rose State Park.

Sally loves getting her wiggles out in state parks - Alli hiding at Lake Manawa State Park.

BUT ARE THEY ACTUALLY SAFE TO VISIT RIGHT NOW?

Great question!

Iowa State Parks are doing all they can to make sure that they’re a safe and reliable place for families to enjoy. They’re encouraging all visitors to abide by social distancing guidelines, stay home if they’re sick, and to avoid popular areas where groups might congregate.

If you’re still concerned, there are several less-congested parks such as Preparation Canyon State Park, Nine Eagles State Park, Wapsipinicon State Park, and Mini-Wakan State Park. (Check out the Iowa Department of Natural Resources website for up-to-date information on visiting these parks.)

Great open spaces for picnics all around!

Plenty of room for pets to roam too!

Even pre-Covid, a morning stroll was peaceful, serene, and uncrowded.

THE IOWA STATE PARK PASSPORT PROGRAM

This year Iowa State Parks are celebrating their 100th anniversary - and to celebrate they’ve launched the Iowa State Park Passport Program! Guests of the parks can sign up for a passport here, which will enable them to “check in” to the parks from their mobile phones.

  • Each check-in: An entry to win the Grand Prize*, a two-night stay at Honey Creek Resort, with golf, indoor water park access and more, as well as discounts at nearby businesses.

*Entries for the Grand Prize will be accepted until October 31, 2020. One winner will be randomly chosen.

So not only can you enjoy the natural beauty of Iowa’s State Parks… but you can win a pretty EPIC prize, too! Whether you’re an Iowa resident or just a road trip away, we highly recommend spending some time visiting their State Parks. Heck, you might even win the Grand Prize!

...And if you do, can we tag along?

With our State Park Passport, we’d head here first - Mines of Spain State Park in Dubuque.

Sally deciding if she wants to jump in Pine Lake…

Friendly locals all around!

We’ll be back again soon! All 4 of us!

VACATION RENTAL GOALS :: MORRO BAY

Maybe it’s because we’re getting older, or maybe it’s because we’ll soon be a “traveling family”, but whatever it is, we’ve recently been really intrigued by vacation rentals. Don’t get us wrong, we still love a good hotel… but there’s something to be said for having an actual home-away-from-home. Having space to spread out, a kitchen to cook in, a cozy living room… it really makes such a difference!

On our last trip before baby, we headed up the California coast to Morro Bay, where there is an amazing variety of unique, picturesque, and surprisingly affordable vacation rentals. We stayed at the Salty Sisters Boutique Hotel, a vacation rental under The Seven Sisters (which we LOVED), and we toured a few others too! Depending on the kind of getaway you’re looking for, and how big your group is, here’s 3 phenomenal vacation rental options in the quaint seaside town of Morro Bay:

THE SALTY SISTERS BOUTIQUE HOTEL

This pristine (and brand new!) vacation rental property sits just steps from the many shops and restaurants along the Morro Bay Embarcadero, and features panoramic views of Morro Rock. There are 6 individual units on the property, that can be combined depending on how many people are joining in the adventures. All of them have kitchens/kitchenettes, and each has its own bright, coastal character.

The location couldn’t have been more ideal, as it’s walking distance to the beach, all of the best Morro Bay shops and restaurants, and there were sea otters basically right outside our door! (Cutest EVER.) We loved every minute of our time there - and are already planning a trip back with our family!

Romantic welcome at our rental!

Movie night at Seven Sisters!

Morning coffee on the lower deck.

The views from the upper deck at the Seven Sisters was the best part!

Stunning kitchen layout! Love the light and bright living space!

Best time of day - wine time on the roof!

THE PELICAN HOUSE

This luxury four-bedroom beachfront home is perfect for a large group, as there’s plenty of space… and it sleeps eight! Plus, the ocean views and patio are nothing short of dreamy. We enjoyed a sunset happy hour by their firepit, and the setting couldn’t have been more idyllic!

The Pelican House is about a five minute drive from downtown Morro Bay, and a quick and easy walk to the beach. They even have the home stocked with surfboards, boogie boards, beach chairs, and more! It’s the perfect oceanfront getaway!

We were obsessed with the patio at The Pelican House!

View doesn’t get old!

THE FISHERMAN’S HOUSE

For a more quirky, cozy, and distinctly “Morro Bay” experience - the vibrant Fisherman’s House is a must! Located steps from the Embarcadero, this one-bedroom bungalow is hands-down one of the most special and unique vacation rentals in town… and the spacious dock is its crowning feature! We ate breakfast one morning there, and it felt like we were in a movie. We have plans to return someday soon and when we do, we’ll most definitely spend most of our time on the dock. (There’s even a spot to clean your fish, if you’re the fishing type!) The decor inside is quaint and welcoming, with a fully-stocked kitchen and a snug little living room area. We know you’ll be as obsessed with it as we are!

We loved The Fisherman’s House!

Spacious kitchen and living room

We’re obsessed with the color!

Breakfast al fresco!

It goes without saying that there are countless other vacation rentals in Morro Bay (you can find more here), but these are three that really stood out to us. (And that we will most definitely be returning to for years to come! If you visit one, be sure to leave a comment and let us know! (And can we join you?!) ;)

No matter where you stay, be prepared for the cutest otters!

YOU MUST GO TO YUMA

Yuma, Arizona is one of those places we’ve grown up hearing about, but never really knew what was there. It wasn’t until our friend Jennifer very enthusiastically convinced us to do some research, that we realized we’d underestimated this historic (and incredibly quirky) desert town. One week later, and we were on our way!

Yuma’s a perfect weekend trip. We were there for just over 48 hours and while our schedule was jam-packed, it felt like a very easy and doable getaway. Below are the spots we visited that we would definitely recommend. Consider this your “hit list” for when you visit!

STAY

HILTON GARDEN INN YUMA :: Overlooking the Colorado River, and walking distance to all the best restaurants and shops, The Hilton Garden Inn is the place to stay when you’re in Yuma.  The rooms are clean and spacious, the facilities are beautiful, and the staff couldn’t have been sweeter. There’s a fitness center, pool, cozy lobby bar and restaurant right on property… and it’s very affordable, too! (Win/win!)

Nice, new Hilton Garden Inn in a great location!

DINE (& DRINK)

CAFECITO :: Finding good coffee in a destination is typically our go-to mission when we arrive, and we were overjoyed to stumble upon Cafecito. Located in a quaint, restored little house, this coffee shop and breakfast spot is a favorite among locals - and it’s easy to see why. Their drinks are great (try their cold brew on tap!), and their breakfast bowls (the Cafecito Oats are a must!) are as pretty as they are delicious!

THE GARDEN CAFE :: This tucked-away breakfast spot is a must-visit, if not for the picturesque garden ambiance, but for the made-from-scratch breakfasts they prepare each day! While Bobby is quick to recommend Yuma’s famous Kammaan Sausage (he went back the next day for seconds), I loved their fruit bread - either way, you won’t be sorry!

THE PINT HOUSE BAR AND GRILL :: With over 50+ craft beers on tap, and a mouthwatering menu featuring artisan pizzas, burgers, and tacos, The Pint House Bar and Grill is most definitely our kind of place. Come on a Wednesday and enjoy any burger on the menu + a craft beer, for only $10!

LUTES CASINO :: One of the most iconic (and eclectic) restaurants in town is Lutes Casino, which has been a Yuma staple for almost 70 years! Be sure to try the “Lutes Especial”, a cheeseburger and hotdog combined - and a special since 1951! Owned and run by the Lutes family, chances are you’ll see Bob, one of the Lutes brothers, serving up drinks and laughs behind the bar. If you do, say hi! Bob’s notorious for making friends and flirting with pretty ladies… you might even get one of his famous keychains!

MR G’S :: Ask any Yuma local where the best breakfast burrito is in town, and they’ll most definitely send you to Mr. G’s! Whether you’re eating there or grabbing to go, you can’t beat their hearty, made-to-order, and affordable burritos… no matter the time of day!

PRISON HILL BREWING COMPANY :: Some of the best food (and BBQ) in town can be found at Prison Hill Brewing Company. We’re big fans of their fried avocado appetizer (a must!), and their Smoked Meat Plate is not to be missed. Come hungry.

The craft beer scene is brewing in Yuma thanks to Prison Hill Brewing - check out the upcoming Rio De Cerveza Brew Fest.  Savor regional craft beer at the Colorado River State Historic Park, along the water with great live music and lots of sunshine. For tickets and more info check out www.riodecerveza.com

SUNSET ON THE RANCH :: If you plan your trip to Yuma just right, you can make one of the most idyllic (and romantic) culinary experiences in town - Sunset on the Ranch. It begins with a tractor-pulled wagon ride around a farm, which takes guests to a picture-perfect farm-to-table dinner highlighting Yuma produce and a local gourmet chef. Take a look here for dates and times.

Coffee is always a good idea… especially from Cafecito

SO many good beers at the Pint House!

Yummy Mr. G’s breakfast burritos for the road.

Prison Hill Brewing!

Bobby would be back in Yuma tomorrow for more Kammaan sausage.

Hamburger with a hot dog in it at Lutes’ Casino. How have we never thought of this?

Bob Lutes hanging with his girls!

Bobby may or may not of had the meat sweats after eating his whole plate.

Perfect evening for al fresco dining

Loving the views of both the ranch and the food!

DO

KAYAK THE COLORADO RIVER :: We can’t think of a better activity on a warm, Yuma day than kayaking the Colorado River! Our guide Ken and his team are happy to take groups of all ages for a peaceful and educational cruise along the river. And if you’re lucky, you might even see a beaver!

YUMA ART CENTER OPEN POTTERY CLASS :: Roll up your sleeves and get messy! We had a blast learning the ins and outs of sculpting with clay - and the friendly folks at Yuma Art Center made the whole experience a blast! (We even had our “Ghost” moment, if you know, you know.) ;) Check their site for class dates and times.

LUTES’ WEDDING CHAPEL :: Whether you’re a history buff or a fan of old-time hollywood, or if you happen to be looking for an legendary spot to say “I do”, a stop by the famous Lutes' Wedding Chapel is a must! Back in the 1930’s there was an extremely long waiting period to get married in California, so many impatient lovers and Hollywood stars made their way to Yuma to get hitched quicker. And this time capsule of a wedding chapel has barely changed since!

YUMA TERRITORIAL PRISON :: Another place that’s a must-visit for history buffs is the Yuma Territorial Prison, which ran from 1876 to 1909. It housed over 3,000 criminals during those 33 years, and was named “The Most Haunted Destination in the Country” by Usa Today in 2019! It’s a fascinating look into prison life and the infamous people that spent time behind bars - many of which were women!

THE CAMEL FARM :: Just an easy 20-minute drive from downtown Yuma is The Camel Farm, a family-run farm raises and rescues all kinds of animals, and they currently have over 150! There’s camels, zebras, goats, and donkeys (among others), and many of which you can hand-feed! They even have a “Zedonk” - a mix between a zebra and a donkey!

IMPERIAL SAND DUNES :: When you’re heading in (or out) of Yuma, be sure to make a detour to the Imperial Sand Dunes for a striking photo opp! You’ll instantly feel as though you’ve been transported to the Sahara desert, and your friends and family won’t believe their eyes when they see your pictures!

Family photo before the kayak adventure.

Our “Ghost” moment. It was Bobby’s first time trying his hand at pottery.

8 months pregnant and still kayaking :)

More pottery fun!

Renewing our vows at Lutes’ Chapel!

Please don’t leave us here! It’s spooky!

Feeding the camels :)

Are we really still in Arizona?

Yuma was full of delicious food, lively culture, and captivating old west history. Once you’ve experienced it, it’ll be a place that YoU MA(st) go back to. Got it? Leave a comment if you’ve been, or if you have a suggestion for where we should visit next time around!
