We Love New York

To us, visiting New York is like visiting a life-long best friend. When we arrive we’re overwhelmed with all the catching up there is to do, and when the time comes to say goodbye, it’s downright painful! There is SO much to do, see, eat, and try in NYC… so we recommend coming up with a gameplan. It’s always smart to have a list of your “Must Do’s” while in the city, but leave room to wander and explore! While Times Square is truly remarkable (especially at night), don’t eat there. The food is expensive, touristy, and mostly chain restaurants. Foodies, make sure you get off the beaten path!! Don’t forget to ask the locals for recommendations, some of the best places we’ve discovered have been from word of mouth.  Here’s a few of our favorite NYC spots!

Tiny’s And The Bar Upstairs: A three-story townhouse built in 1810 and converted to a restaurant & bar, Tiny’s is by far the most historic spot on our list! Paired with a delicious, high-quality menu and drinks, impeccable service and fantastic branding - Tiny’s cannot be missed! Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We recommend bypassing the crowds and coming for lunch. If available, sit by the fireplace.

Levain Bakery:Cookies to die for. And we don’t say that lightly. A visit to Levain’s is an absolute MUST when visiting New York, and chances are you won’t go just once. A small bakery on the Upper West Side, Levain Bakery was started by two best friends with a love for chocolate chip cookies. Today their cookies have received international recognition, attracting fans across the globe. (Even Taylor Swift recently instagrammed about them!) Our favorite flavors? Alli loves the Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip cookie (pictured), Bobby loves the Chocolate Chip Walnut. But all four flavors are incredible, so we say try one of each! We try to make one last stop at Levain right before we head to the airport, so we have treats for the plane.

Smith and Mills: If you haven’t already noticed, we love finding hidden gems in every location we visit. Smith and Mills is one of those places! If this quaint bar and restaurant hadn't been recommended to us, we would have easily passed right by it. There are no signs, just two big wooden doors that open up to one of the most intriguing and cozy spots we’ve ever been. We recommend sitting in a corner booth by a window, ordering a Pimm’s Cup (or two), and soaking in the alluring ambiance. And definitely check out the bathroom sink. Weird, we know, but it’s really cool. Open for lunch & dinner.

Eataly: Words simply cannot do this place justice. Eataly is a high-end Italian food market, consisting of beautiful food displays, restaurants, bakery items, and SO much more! Co-owner and world-famous Chef Mario Batali describes it as a “grocery store with tasting rooms” and we describe it as heaven on earth! We recommend that you plan on spending at least a couple hours inside Eataly - walk through the food halls, share a cheese tray at a standing table at La Piazza, followed by pizza at La Pizza and Pasta (the margherita is award-winning!) and an espresso at Caffe Vergnano. Are you hungry yet? Open daily, 10am-11pm.

ABC Kitchen: Fresh, seasonal, artistic, and an atmosphere we are trying to re-create in our house! While we have yet to sample everything on the menu, we know that you can’t go wrong at ABC Kitchen. They take pride in every ingredient and every entree they create, and it shows! Make a reservation, as it does get busy. We recommend coming about an hour early, so you can shop around in the ABC Carpet & Home store (connected to the restaurant). You’ll be glad you did! Open for lunch & dinner, and brunch on Saturdays.

Chelsea Market: This is so much more than an indoor food hall, it’s an experience! Located in the meatpacking district, the Chelsea Market takes up a whole block, and has more than 35 vendors! Some of our favorites? The Doughnuttery, Fat Witch Bakery, and Cork Buzz Wine Studio!

The 11th St. Bar: This neighborhood Irish pub hosts live music every Sunday night that will make you feel as though you’ve died and gone to heaven (or Ireland)! There's no need to rush, as the musicians don’t start arriving until 11pm. Grab a seat at the bar, order a Guinness, and soak in the music. Your life will never be the same.

The Broome: Choosing a hotel in NYC is daunting. It can seem as though the options are endless. With so many up-and-coming neighborhoods, it’s nearly impossible to pick where to stay! The Broome in SOHO has quickly become our new go-to. It features top-of-the-line bedding and decor, friendly staff (you’ll leave feeling like they’re family), and complimentary breakfast (featuring the most amazing cappuccinos and lattes!) And with only 14 rooms, The Broome feels like a small oasis in the Big Apple.

Walking All Over San Francisco

It’s easy to get overwhelmed in San Francisco. From the Golden Gate Bridge, to Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, Union Square… there are endless sights to see! One could easily spend two weeks in the city and still feel like they need more time! That being said, it IS possible to explore San Francisco in a day or two. Just make sure you do your research and wear good shoes (we walked 17 miles in 24 hours)! As we said with New York, the best way to see the city is through the locals eyes, so make some friends and ask for recommendations! Here’s just a few of our favorite spots:

The Clift: We love this hotel for many reasons. The modern decor, the comfy beds, the central Downtown location, the accommodating staff… it’s a Bay Area gem! The Clift is also home to the historic Red Room bar and lounge. Its gorgeous wood walls come from the wood of ONE redwood tree! Unreal! Make sure you utilize the Clift’s concierge, as ours was extremely helpful, and had two pages of incredible recommendations for us.

The Mill: The best toast you will ever have. Maybe that doesn’t sound enticing, but you have to try it to believe it. The Mill gets its’ name from the mill they use to make the bread. Throw in a cup of Four Barrel Coffee, and you have a breakfast to remember! We loved the almond butter and honey (notice how it was served), but we’re confident you can’t go wrong here.

Tartine Bakery & Bar Tartine: Since we’re on the topic of bread… it would be criminal to visit San Francisco without stopping by Tartine Bakery. It has been coined one of the most influential bakeries in the world, and it’s easy to see why. Started by a husband and wife duo, (woot woot!!) Chad and Elisabeth Robertson in 2002, Tartine is home to some of our favorite baked goods.  Don’t let the long lines sway you - it’s well worth the wait! Two words: morning bun. Don't leave Tartine without one. Or five.

Philz Coffee: In Phil’s words, “Frank Sinatra was born to sing, and Phil Jaber was born to make coffee.” We couldn’t agree more. Each cup of coffee is made individually, like a pour-over, but somehow they do it better. If you're a coffee buff, Phil is definitely a coffee experience you won’t want to miss! (There are several Philz locations throughout downtown San Francisco - we used Yelp to see what was closest.)

Jane on Fillmore:  A small neighborhood cafe on Fillmore, Jane’s is a spot that San Francisco locals flock to...  and for good reason! The food, Stumptown coffee, and ambiance are all amazing, (not to mention an Instagrammer’s dream)! Jane's is our favorite for a light breakfast!

Temecula Getaway!

Ponte Winery Inn & Restaurant: If you live in Southern California, and haven’t been to Temecula, you are truly missing out! Weekend getaways to Temecula are quickly becoming a favorite pastime of ours, and we have found the perfect place to stay. This 60 room boutique hotel is just as visually stunning on the inside as it is on the outside, with elegant features and posh decor. Not to mention the views of the surrounding vineyards are absolutely breathtaking! They are also home to some of our favorite restaurants in Temecula, so you really can’t go wrong! Bouquet is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and has both indoor and outdoor dining. We strongly recommend sitting outside in the courtyard… it’s heavenly! The Restaurant at Ponte is outdoors in the middle of gardens and vineyards, that are lit by twinkle lights each evening. It’s one of the most romantic (and delicious) restaurants we have ever experienced!

Magical Staycation in Laguna Beach... Can We Do This Monthly?

It’s possible that your only knowledge of Laguna Beach is based on the MTV reality show a few years back. Don’t worry, we don’t judge you. (Alli owns all of 3 seasons.) But while Laguna Beach is the famed birthplace of Lauren Conrad, it is SO much more than what you’ve seen on TV! Laguna Beach is home to some of the most picturesque beaches on the California coast, quaint hotels, scenic restaurants, and specialty shops and boutiques. If you are looking to escape to a relaxing, pampering, and dreamy beach town - Laguna Beach is it! A word of precaution: Laguna Beach is touristy. We recommend avoiding the Summer crowds, and visit in the Spring, Fall, or Winter months!

The Inn at Laguna Beach: What serves wine during sunset, cookies and milk for dessert, has stunning ocean views and is steps from the hustle of restaurants, bars, and world-class shopping? The Inn at Laguna Beach! From the location to the countless little ways their staff makes every guest feel like family, The Inn at Laguna Beach is an oceanfront gem. We highly suggest walking across the street to the neighborhood Whole Foods, buying some wine, bread and cheese, and having a picnic on your balcony. This, folks, is what dreams are made of.

Las Brisas: Located next door to The Inn at Laguna Beach, Las Brisas serves up Mexican cuisine with a coastal twist! Las Brisas has it all: oceanfront views, friendly staff, handcrafted cocktails, chips and salsa… do we need to continue?! We’ve tried several entrees on the menu and have yet to be disappointed, but our favorite is their new Chicken Mole!

Pacific Northwest Adventure: Portland

We have a special place in our hearts for Portland. Voted one of the most “green” cities in the world, you can easily explore Portland by foot or by bike, and you are never far from a tree-lined park. We prefer visiting in the Fall and/or Spring, as the colors are vibrant and the whether is crisp!  Natural beauty aside, Portland boasts some of our favorite restaurants, coffee shops, and hotels. And with no sales tax, it’s a great excuse to do some shopping!

Riverplace HotelWhile we try to avoid major hotel chains, we are big fans of Kimpton. Their hotels are always unique, modern-yet-inviting, and located in ideal locations. The Riverplace Hotel by Kimpton is no exception. Located on the Willamette River, it boasts an impeccable view of the water, and yet it is only a stones throw from downtown PDX. While the hip decor alone draws us to the Riverplace, they also have an evening wine reception, coffee and tea in the mornings, and Linus bikes for their guests to ride. If you’re visiting in the wintertime, nothing is more inviting than sitting by the big fireplace in the lobby!

The Nines: If you are looking for a true Portland city experience, there is no better spot to stay than the Nines Hotel. The Nines not only has a central location, helpful staff, and some of our FAVORITE restaurants (Departure & Urban Farmer), but their accommodations will make you feel like royalty. Make sure you request a room on one of the top floors, as the views of the city are breathtaking!

Portland is a coffee lover’s dream. There are SO many options - just try yelping “coffee” and you’ll instantly feel defeated. Instead of limiting ourselves, we like to hit up 3 or 4 coffee shops in one day, and share a cup here and there (so we don’t get too “buzzed”). Anyways, here’s a few of our favorite places to grab a cup of joe.

Barista

Coava

Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Case Study Coffee

Heart

Crema

Multnomah Whiskey LibraryWords can’t really describe this place, you just need to go. The line forms quick, but don’t let that sway you. Put your name in and walk around the city, they’ll text you when you’re up. Whatever you do, make sure you order the brussel sprouts.

Ava Genes: Ava Gene’s serves a “Roman Inspired” menu… we’re not entirely sure what that means, but whatever it is, it’s GOOD. The plates are small and meant to be shared. Ask your server for suggestions, it’s hard to choose!

Departure: You can safely assume that when a restaurant’s head chef was a finalist on “Top Chef”, the food is going to be top notch. Departure will blow your expectations away, as the pan-Asian menu is some of the best we’ve ever tasted. Especially the chicken wings. Life = changed.

Urban Farmer: One of our favorite breakfasts in Portland is located right in the lobby of The Nines Hotel! The entire breakfast menu is amazing, but we highly recommend the eggs benedict. Great coffee, too!
