What we’re about to say may be controversial, but after a long weekend in Scottsdale, Arizona, we’re now convinced this is true. Are you ready for it?

Not every holiday getaway needs to have snow.

There, we said it. While sure, a “white Christmas” is dreamy and all, there is something equally magical about Scottsdale during the holiday season. This desert town comes alive in the prettiest (and oftentimes quirkiest ways), and it absolutely stole our hearts. No gloves or snowboots required!

Here’s our Scottsdale Holiday Hit List that’s bound to have you already planning your 2020 holiday vacation.

COACH HOUSE TAVERN

Not only is Coach House Tavern known for being Scottsdale’s oldest tavern, but they’re also known for taking Christmas lights REALLY seriously. Like, you can’t believe your eyes seriously. Our mouths were dropped from the moment we approached the tavern, and exploring the inside made us even more impressed. Every square inch is decorated with colorful Christmas lights - it’s truly something to witness. Order a drink (or two) at the bar, pull up a stool, and make some friends. See ya there next year?

CHRISTMAS AT THE PRINCESS

You can’t visit Scottsdale during the holiday season without a visit to Christmas At The Princess, the iconic Christmas experience at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. The spacious and stunning resort is transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with light shows, ice skating, festive rides, treats, characters, and SO much more! There’s even an area called “S’mores Land”, complete with s’mores making kits and cozy campfires. It’s a Christmas lovers dream!

CHRISTMAS TOUR WITH JOYRIDESAZ

What better way to admire Scottsdale’s Christmas decor and holiday charm than by a guided golf cart tour? The friendly folks at JoyRidesAZ make every single tour unique and so much fun. Interested in wine tasting? They’ll take you to the best tasting rooms in Old Town! Fascinated by the history of Scottsdale? They’ll take you to some must-see landmarks. Looking for that perfect backdrop for your next Instagram post? They know the best photo spots (and are amazing photographers too)! We had a blast adventuring through town with them, and some of our favorite pictures from our trip were taken by the JoyRidesAZ crew. It’s absolutely a must-do!

MCCORMICK STILLMAN RAILROAD PARK

One of the most quintessential holiday experiences in Scottsdale is the Holiday Lights train ride at the quaint McCormick Stillman Railroad Park. Riders of all ages can take in a joyous array of lights, music, and dazzling displays… and for only $5 per person, it’s quite a steal! After the train ride, make sure to check out their on-site Scottsdale Railroad Museum, which brings the history of railroads to life!

SHOPPING IN OLD TOWN SCOTTSDALE

Old Town Scottsdale is charming no matter the time of year, but it’s truly something special at Christmastime. The streets are strung with colorful lights, the shops are decorated with charming displays, and everyone’s abuzz with holiday cheer. We recommend walking the streets in the late afternoon, with a cup of hot cocoa or a peppermint mocha in-hand. Then, grab an early dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants nearby.

Maybe we should make this an annual holiday tradition?

The holidays may be over, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start planning for Christmas 2020. (And if you’re anything like us, anticipating your next holiday getaway is part of the fun!) We can’t recommend Scottsdale enough, and we can’t wait to return next year… with our little one in tow!

With the new year comes new opportunities for weekend escapes. We’re always on the hunt for fun, quick, and easy getaways - and since our holiday trip to Scottsdale back in early December, it’s moved up to the top of our travel list. Scottsdale has it all - sprawling hotels and resorts, a booming culinary scene, picture-perfect scenery, world-class shopping, outdoor adventures… and did we mention a booming culinary scene? We’d go back to Scottsdale just for the food!

Scottsdale is understatedly cool, and that’s exactly why we like it. Plan a trip during the summer – their off-season (May-September) – and you’ll find slamming deals on hotels. (We’re talking 60% off peak season rates!) Need we say more?

Oh ya, and here’s where WE think you should stay, eat, and explore if you just need a quick 48-hour retreat...

STAY:

Andaz Scottsdale Resort and Bungalows

Overlooking Camelback Mountain, this modern and welcoming oasis couldn’t be more picturesque - or more luxurious! The bungalow style rooms are spacious and filled with amenities, from complimentary drinks and snacks to cozy robes and a shower that’s bigger than our entire bathroom at home!

The property itself is stunning, with perfectly maintained courtyards, a jaw-dropping pool area, and an inviting lobby that’s thoughtfully decorated with local art. In fact, all of the rooms have artwork from local artists - and you can even go on a free art tour of the property during your stay!

AFTERNOON:

After you’re all checked in and settled, spend the rest of the day shopping and meandering around Old Town Scottsdale. From charming boutiques to trendy coffee shops to family-owned wine tasting rooms, there’s something for everyone - and enough to keep one entertained for hours! Some of our favorite spots include:

Cricket and Ruby: It’s no secret we’re in full on “baby mode” over here, so we were thrilled to find this adorable little children's boutique. They even have some cute bohemian-chic “Mamma and Me” sets that Alli was eyeing… she could have easily bought the entire store!

Cartel Coffee Lab: We sometimes plan our Arizona adventures around this trendy and downright delicious coffee shop. Their baristas are friendly and knowledgeable, and their coffee is strong and full of flavor - it’s the perfect afternoon pick me up!

The Plant Store: Finally a shop the two of us could agree on! This perfectly Iinstagrammable and airy space is filled with beautifully curated cacti, succulents, and house plants, and there’s even an area where you can pot your own!

Leela Market: Filled to the brim with playful gifts, Arizona-themed accessories and decor, and even some stylish women’s wear, this is THE place to souvenir shop. It’s “Desert Luxe” at its finest!

EVENING:

End the night at The Mission, a modern Latin restaurant that’s bursting with flavor and sophistication. The atmosphere is stylish and elegant, and yet casual and inviting all in one… and the food. Oh, we could write a whole blog about the many mind-blowing dishes at The Mission. They’re incredible.

From the tableside guacamole (we both agree it’s the best guacamole we’ve ever had - and we’ve had a LOT of guacamole), to the crispy pork belly with a cola lime glaze, to the tacos made on hand-pressed corn tortillas, to the mouthwatering desserts… you’ll be tempted to order one of everything. We did, and we had zero regrets.

Oh and of course, no trip to The Mission is complete without a margarita (or two). You can’t go wrong with The Mission Margarita (add grand marnier for a real treat), and if you’re feeling adventurous, we highly recommend the Aguacate. It’s an avocado margarita that will have you wondering why you hadn’t thought of this combination sooner.

Make a reservation in advance, as they are known to fill up quick. And most importantly, COME HUNGRY.

MORNING:

We can’t think of a better way to work off your big dinner than a sunrise hike at the Gateway Loop Trailhead in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. We suggest arranging a guide with REI Co-op Experiences, who will not only take you to and from the preserve, but will also lead you along the trail, sharing fascinating facts about the plants and wildlife you encounter, and give an insightful look into Arizona’s rich history. This guided experience was one of the highlights of our trip, hands down!

If you’re anything like us, at this point you’ve worked up an appetite. Farm & Craft serves healthy and sustainable food, with a seasonal wellness menu, kombucha on tap, and all ingredients are gluten free, hormone free, and organic. Their breakfast menu is as hearty as it is healthy, with some of our favorites being the Egg White Scramble and The Breakfast Sandwich. If you’re feeling like something sweet, try their Acai Bowl!

AFTERNOON:

There’s no lack of activities in Scottsdale, but one of our favorite things to do when we’re there is to set aside some time to relax and enjoy the hotel amenities. So we suggest doing exactly that.

If the weather is nice (which it most likely will be), spend the afternoon at The Andaz’s spacious and alluring pool. If you find yourselves hungry for a light bite, dine at their on-site restaurant Weft and Warp. Or cozy up in your private bungalow and take a nap on the feathery-bed… Hey, nothing says “vacation” like doing nothing!

EVENING:

If you’re beginning to notice a “foodie theme” to this itinerary, you’ve caught us. The culinary scene in Scottsdale is so advanced and wide-spread, we can’t help but revolve a good chunk of this getaway around dining!

That being said, book a reservation at Toro Scottsdale, where Pan-Latin cuisine takes the stage, bringing together inspiration from Latin America, Japanese, and Peruvian-Chinese influences. It’s a melting pot of flavor that’s unlike anything we’ve had before… and it blew us away. (Where else can you order empanadas and sushi?!) They also have the Valley’s largest selection of rums - over 111, and their skilled bartenders make a daiquiri that will have even the most skeptical drinkers singing its praises.

MORNING:

You can’t visit Scottsdale without an indulgent (and creative) breakfast at Hash Kitchen. It’s a must. We realized we were in for a treat the moment we walked in and saw the build-your-own bloody mary bar (Arizona’s largest) and heard the people in the booth next to us raving about the Cannoli Donuts. While the HK Hashes are their specialty, you can’t go wrong with anything on their extensive menu - try their Cereal Shooter Flight for breakfast cocktails like you’ve never had before!

After you’re fed and happy, take an Instagrammable (and educational) golf cart tour around Scottsdale with our friends Kirk and Monica from JoyRridesAZ! They’ll customize your tour based on your interests, and make plenty of stops for photos, exploration, and even wine tasting! After a few hours with this dynamic husband and wife duo, we were convinced that the best way to see Scottsdale is by golf cart… and we have a feeling you’ll be hooked too! (Plus, they’re expert photo takers - some of our favorite pictures from the trip were taken by Monica!)

AFTERNOON:

Stop for lunch at Hula’s Modern Tiki, an urban twist on the classic tiki bars of the 50’s and 60’s, right in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. Sip on mai tais, snack on their famous Crispy Coconut Shrimp Rolls, and pig out (literally) on Duke’s Luau Pork Plate. It’s a taste of Hawaii in the desert, and it’s fun for the whole ohana!

Just half a mile down the road is the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, a visually compelling and uniquely curated collection of art, architecture, and design. Many of the compelling exhibits are interactive, and all of them will inevitably cause you to see the world a little differently.

EVENING:

It’s your last night in Scottsdale, so why not go all out? The Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort & Spa offers a Wine Me, Dine Me dinner at SWB, their southwest bistro. This culinary experience has guests dining on an exclusive, made to order, four-course dinner prepared by Chef Joe and his incredibly talented team. They have nightly seatings at 6:00 and 8:00pm, and paired with the menu are specialty glasses of tequila and wine. Guests sit at a bar overlooking the open kitchen, and get a first-hand look as each course is created. If you consider yourself a “foodie”, this experience is a must!

MORNING:

End your Scottsdale getaway with coffee and a light breakfast at one of our favorite local spots, Maverick Coffee. Located in an unassuming strip mall, you’ll wonder why we sent you here… until you step inside and see that this place is buzzing (both literally and figuratively) and that the food and coffee is top-notch. Try their avocado toast or breakfast burrito, and wash it down with the Kyoto Cold Brew or their Bullet Proof Coffee!

When you think of Arizona, what pops into your mind?

We’ve always associated Arizona with warm desert weather, the Grand Canyon, and Saguaro cacti… until now. A couple of weeks ago we road tripped to the small city of Prescott, Arizona, where we saw a new side of the shining Copper State.

Located in Yavapai County, Prescott is an easy hour and a half drive north of Phoenix and an hour and a half west of Sedona. Set at an elevation of 5,200, Prescott is surrounded by Ponderosa pine forests and boasts an average temperature of a cool 70 degrees. We were welcomed by crisp mountain air and rolling meadows, and we knew almost immediately that Prescott is a special place.

THE “TOWN”

The city of Prescott (pronounced “Presskit”) couldn’t be more charming. I (Alli) kept remarking that Prescott reminded me of a Hallmark Christmas movie, with a quaint town plaza and bustling main street. Prescott was once Arizona’s territorial capitol, so it’s full of historical landmarks and Wild West History - and it’s also home to the ”World’s Oldest Rodeo” (Which occurs around the 4th of July Weekend, and you better believe it’s added to our bucket list!)

There are historic saloons, local boutiques and shops, renowned restaurants (more on the food scene later), museums, and more lining the downtown. We spent an entire day shopping, eating, and leisurely exploring downtown Prescott, and we had a blast! Some must-visit spots include the Jersey Lilly Saloon for a drink at the bar, The Treat Center for an old-fashioned sweet treat, the Wild Iris Coffeehouse for an afternoon pick-me-up, and the famous Hassayampa Inn to warm up by their cozy fire.

THE CULINARY SCENE

It’s impossible to go hungry in Prescott, with cute cafes and farm-to-table restaurants at nearly every turn. And if you’ve been following us for awhile, you know that good food is one of the first things we look for in a new destination! The Palace Restaurant and Saloon is arguably one of the most iconic in the area, as it dates back to 1877 - and it’s even been voted one of the 10 Most Historic Bars in America by USA Today! Don’t leave without trying the Palace Pulled Pork Sliders!

FARM Provisions serves fresh and organic fare that rotates seasonally, and utilizes local Arizona farmers and ranchers. It’s the perfect place to go for a healthy and hearty lunch or dinner, and they have extensive Vegan and Gluten Free menus too! (Alli had the Farm Vegan Tacos, and they were delicious!)

The Barley Hound is Prescott’s beloved gastropub, serving old-school classics like fried green tomatoes and flavorful burgers with a unique and creative twist. Their cocktails are undoubtedly some of the best in the area, our favorite being the Old Fashioned!

And no trip to Prescott is complete without breakfast at The Local, a true local favorite. Everything is made from scratch with local ingredients, and they serve breakfast all day long. Bobby still raves about their Broken Egg Sammie!

STAY AT THE GRAND HIGHLAND HOTEL

We had the privilege of staying at the Grand Highland Hotel, a boutique gem on Prescott’s famed Whiskey Row. This 115 year old building is full of Prescott history, and the rooms incorporate old time charm with modern flair. We were obsessed! One of our favorite touches is that breakfast is included, and you can have it delivered to your room in the morning!

With a newly remodeled ground floor, the Grand Highland is also an incredible wedding venue with a stunning courtyard. Most importantly, the Grand Highland sits on Whiskey Row which is right on the town plaza. It’s the perfect location to explore downtown!

WATSON LAKE

Just four miles away from downtown Prescott is Watson Lake, a stunning reservoir that ended up being one of the highlights of our trip. The crystal clear water and the staggering rock formations make for one epic backdrop, and an ideal spot to hike, picnic, and explore! If you’re feeling extra adventurous, and the weather permits, we suggest renting a kayak to explore. That’s on our list for next time!

ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY

Probably our favorite fact is that Prescott is known for being “Arizona’s Christmas City” - and that’s reason enough for us to want to return! From the end of November through mid January there are light tours, parades, live music and performances, cultural experiences, free events, and the Whiskey Row Boot Drop on New Year’s Eve… and due to Prescott’s high elevation, chances are you’ll see some snowfall! Tempe-ted To Never Leave!

Tempe, AZ is a city we knew relatively little about. We knew it was a college town, and had heard from friends that it’s a “foodie” city (reason enough to plan a visit) - but that’s about it! As we started planning our road trip up to Colorado, we figured this was the perfect opportunity to explore Tempe… and we LOVED IT!

Here’s why:

IT’S BEAUTIFUL.

Tempe is STUNNING - just look at the view from our room! The rolling hills, the colorful foliage, the rustic, desert terrain… photos don’t do this place justice. Our first morning in Tempe, we hiked the Kiwani’s trail to Dobbins Lookout in South Mountain Park - and the views were jaw-dropping. Even our dog Sally was in awe!! At least, she looked like it ;)

While we’re on the topic of jaw dropping-beauty, let’s talk about the sunsets in Tempe. They’re unreal. Both nights we were there we witnessed some of the most vibrantly colorful sunsets our eyes have seen in a long time. We recommend heading to the Mill Avenue Bridge and catching the sunset over the Tempe Town Lake. Only way it could get better if you’re on a boat during the sunset. We’ll make that a goal for next time.

THE FOOD SCENE IS UP AND COMING.

You can tell a lot about a destination by the food. What we learned from Tempe’s foodie scene is that it’s just getting started. There are so many new, unique and notable restaurants popping up in Tempe that it honestly overwhelmed us. We needed to stay at least five more days to eat at all the spots we read about! A few of the places we DID get to check out are:

Pedal Haus Brewery: If you love a good brewery, you’ll love this spot. Solid beers, a killer happy hour, and a hummus plate we’re STILL raving about. (If anyone knows their recipe, please share.)
Postino Annex: A hip wine bar with incredible bruschetta, paninis, and (of course) wine. You’ll likely find us here!
Culinary Dropout: Creative cocktails, delicious gastro-pub fare (get the pretzel bites!), and a variety of lawn games. Culinary Dropout is a great spot to not only dine, but hang out for the whole afternoon!
Morning Squeeze: Fresh, hearty and delicious breakfast spot. Their menu is extensive (almost too much to choose from!!) and their servers are SO friendly. Plus they have a dog menu. Any place that has a dog menu is basically a winner to us.
Cartel Coffee Lab: Some of the best coffee we’ve had in awhile. Get an oat milk latte with a little honey and your life will be changed. (Or be like Bobby and get a pour over - simple and smooth.)
First Watch: This breakfast and lunch spot has it all - but what we really love there is their green juice. It’s so tasty you’ll forget just how healthy and packed with nutrients it really is!

THERE’S SO MUCH TOO DO!

We thought we had lucky timing when we planned our trip to Tempe. There was a plethora of events and things going on in and around the city - but we later learned that’s normal here! No matter the time of year, there’s something fun to do, see, and explore. There’s great shopping, headlining shows, beautiful trails… However - if you’re planning on coming next November/December, here are two things you need to make sure are on your list:

Desert Botanical Garden: Open year-round, this is a botanical garden that is thoughtfully curated with a spectacular living art collection. If you happen to be there between now and mid-2019, you MUST come at night to visit the ‘Electric Desert’. The light show uses three-dimensional projection mapping to wrap animations around the cacti and other plants, simulating motion. It is mind-blowing! It feels as if you are walking in a dream, or hallucinating. Go, and thank us later!
Tempe Festival of the Arts: This is only the largest craft show in the nation (no big deal). There are over 375 vendors, live music, and all kinds of food and drink options. This festival is an all-day affair, and takes place along Mill Avenue, one of the main streets in Tempe. It’s a HOOT! It’s the perfect place to Christmas shop, make new friends, and sip on small-batch peppermint hot cocoa.

IT’S DOG FRIENDLY

(Sally approves this message) We were honestly so impressed by how dog friendly Tempe is. Whether we were walking to coffee, hiking up South Mountain, or grabbing breakfast at Morning Squeeze, Sally was welcomed with open arms. Literally - everyone wanted to pet her!! Since we can’t always take Sally with us on our adventures, we really appreciate when we can. And we really appreciate a hotel that goes above and beyond for their four-footed friends. The Graduate Hotel Tempe did just that. She even got a Bark Box when we checked in!

IT’S AFFORDABLE

Something that’s really important to us, especially when we’re planning weekend getaways, is the affordability factor. We don’t want to spend an arm and a leg for a 48-hour trip. We’re happy to report that Tempe is as easy on the wallet as it is on the eyes! There are a lot of activities you can do that are FREE, hotel rooms are moderately priced, and there are a ton of fun, casual restaurants that won’t break the bank.

All in all, go to Tempe. You’re bound to have a blast. You might even be Tempe-ted to move. ;) (And keep your eyes peeled for a Tempe guide - we’ll have it up soon!)

Quick Southwest Road Trip: Exploring Horseshoe Bend and Zion National Park

Since our big “Month Long Roadtripping Extravaganza”, we’ve been itching for an excuse to get back on the open road. After stumbling upon some photos and doing some research, we decided to do a last-minute trip to Page, Arizona and Zion National Park. The amount of natural beauty and grand landscapes that we saw in four days still has us shaking our heads in awe… this trip was life-giving to us in so many ways, and it’s SO DOABLE. Here’s what we did!

Let’s start with Page, Arizona.

You’ve probably never heard of this little town before, but bear with us. It’s located next to Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon, and countless hikes and areas to explore. It’s an affordable town to stay in, and it’s incredibly close to all of the action. We stayed at the Hyatt Place Page/Lake Powell, and it was great. Big, clean rooms, hearty breakfasts, stunning views, and a helpful staff. We highly recommend it!

From there you’re just a quick ten minute drive to Horseshoe Bend, and we recommend going early, especially in high season. (Expect crowds year-round, but November-February are generally considered to be slower.) It’s a good 20 minute hike from the parking lot, so be sure to wear good shoes and bring water. And brace yourself for…

THE VIEWS!!

Words don’t do this place justice - so we’ll let the photos do the talking. We happened to be there during some pretty intense rainstorms… We did see some sun break through for an hour (WOO!), but we definitely were soaking wet by the end!

Now because of the rainy weather, we weren’t able to explore Antelope Canyon on this trip, which we were definitely bummed about. (Keep that in mind when planning your trip: rain = mud and/or flash floods, and if it’s muddy they close the canyons!) But we made the best of it and explored other spots - including the Glen Canyon Dam and lookout points. All incredibly breathtaking - especially if you’re scared of heights like we are!!

TIP: We think two nights in Page is perfect. That gives you ample time to see the sights, hike around, and explore. Beyond that there isn’t a whole lot to do there, and dining options are pretty limited. Pack snacks!

Zion National Park

Just two hours northwest of Page, Arizona is Zion National Park - and it just might be our favorite national park yet. We spent the last two nights of our trip at the Cliffrose Lodge, located just steps from the entrance to the park. Not only was the location phenomenal, but the newly remodeled rooms were gorgeous, and the mountain views from our balcony left us in awe. We couldn’t have picked a better place to stay!

There are several stunning hikes in and around Zion National Park, but the big “bucketlist” one for us was “The Narrows”. It’s anything but a typical hike - as you squeeze through slot canyons and wade through a river… and it was absolutely the highlight of our trip!

Things to know:

Rent equipment. We went when the water (and air!) was cold, so we rented waterproof pants along with boots and a walking stick. In the summertime, all you need are good water shoes and a walking stick. You might even find yourself jumping all the way in!
Go early. We left on the first shuttle bus at 7am (it’s only accessible by shuttle), and it was perfect. We almost always had the hike to ourselves!! But on our way back it quickly became a zoo, as it’s one of the most popular hikes in Zion. The earlier you go, the better chance you have at avoiding crowds.
Pack water & snacks. No matter how you do it, it’s a long hike. Plan on being gone at least five or six hours, so plan accordingly. We brought a big canteen of water and some Clif Bars to hold us over, and that was perfect.
Make sure you go to the bathroom. Like we said, it’s a long hike. And there’s no porta potties or rest stops along the way! There’s a bathroom where the shuttle first drops you off - so take advantage of it. ;)

Our time in Zion was limited. Unlike Page, two nights definitely wasn’t enough for all that we wanted to see and do! We recommend going for at least three nights, so you have enough time to hike, drive, and explore. Oh, and the dining options are great. Some of our favorites were Zion Pizza and Noodle Co, Thai Sapa, and Oscars Cafe!

This road trip was quick, and had a fair share of “bumps” in the road - but it’s one of our favorite ones we’ve done yet. We can’t wait to get back to Page and explore Antelope Canyon, and adventure through Zion National Park again… and maybe even bring our pup next time!
